Can Liposuction Get Rid of Cellulite?
Posted on [post_date] [post_comments] [post_edit]
Cellulite is one of the most common aesthetic concerns for women and men alike, affecting the thighs, buttocks, hips and sometimes the abdomen. Although completely harmless, the dimpled, uneven texture of cellulite often leads people to seek treatments that can smooth and tighten the skin. , one of the most requested cosmetic procedures in the UK, is often considered a viable solution. But does liposuction actually get rid of cellulite, or is that a myth?
At Centre for Surgery in London, we are often asked whether liposuction is the answer to stubborn cellulite. Our team offers a comprehensive range of body contouring procedures, including advanced techniques specifically designed to address cellulite. In this article, we’ll explore what really is, whether liposuction can help, and which treatments deliver the most effective and long-lasting results.
Understanding What Cellulite Really Is
Before examining liposuction, it is helpful to understand exactly what cellulite is. Cellulite forms when fibrous connective bands beneath the skin pull down on the tissue, while fat cells push up against the skin. This combination creates the dimpled or “orange peel” effect many people find frustrating. Hormones, genetics, lifestyle and even skin thickness can all influence how visible cellulite is.
Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not simply excess fat. You can be slim, healthy and active and still develop cellulite. That is why treatments aimed purely at fat removal, such as liposuction, cannot directly address the root cause.
How Liposuction Works
Liposuction is designed to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body. Small incisions are made in discreet areas and a cannula is inserted to gently break up and suction out fat . Modern techniques allow for very precise sculpting, whether on the abdomen, hips, thighs or arms.
The aim of liposuction is to reshape and contour the body, reducing stubborn bulges that don’t respond to diet and exercise. It is not, however, a skin treatment. Liposuction does not target the connective tissue bands responsible for cellulite and it does not alter the skin’s surface .

Does Liposuction Help Cellulite at All?
Many people are surprised to learn that liposuction does not cure cellulite. In some cases, liposuction may even make cellulite look more noticeable. This can happen because fat has been removed, but the bands beneath the skin remain unchanged. Without fat to stretch and smooth the skin, the dimples may appear deeper.
That said, liposuction can improve the overall silhouette and contour of the body. Some patients find that once they achieve a slimmer, more sculpted figure, cellulite appears less prominent, even though it has not been treated directly. Liposuction should therefore be seen as a body contouring tool, not a cellulite removal procedure.
Why Liposuction Alone Is Not Enough
The most important point to understand is that cellulite is a structural issue. Those fibrous connective bands are what create the dimpled texture. Liposuction removes fat, but it does not cut or release these bands. Without targeting the underlying cause, cellulite cannot be fully treated.
For patients who want smoother skin as well as fat reduction, liposuction may be combined with other treatments. However, at Centre for Surgery we usually recommend advanced, minimally invasive techniques that directly target cellulite itself, offering far more reliable results.
Effective Treatments for Cellulite
So, if liposuction is not the answer, what is? Cellulite requires treatment that specifically addresses the fibrous tissue and improves skin quality. At Centre for Surgery, our preferred approach two cutting-edge techniques in a procedure called ‘‘: subcision and argo plasma skin tightening.
is a proven method that directly treats the fibrous bands beneath the skin. During the procedure, a tiny specialised blade or needle is used to release these bands. Once the tethering is released, the skin springs back, and the dimpled appearance is dramatically reduced. Results are usually visible very quickly and continue to improve as the skin heals.
Following subcision, we often . This advanced technology uses controlled plasma energy to stimulate collagen production and contract the skin. It helps to smooth the surface and create a firmer, more look. When combined with subcision, plasma skin tightening enhances both and long-term results.
This combination procedure directly addresses both the cause of cellulite and the quality of the skin, which is why it has become one of the most effective options available today.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Patients who are by dimpled skin on the thighs, buttocks or hips are often good candidates for cellulite treatment. It’s important to have realistic expectations. Cellulite is extremely common, and no treatment can promise to remove it entirely. However, subcision and plasma skin tightening can make a dramatic difference, smoothing the skin and reducing the uneven appearance.
For those who also want fat reduction, liposuction can still play a role. It can be separately or alongside other treatments, depending on your goals. The key is a tailored approach designed around your specific needs.
What to Expect During Recovery
Both liposuction and advanced cellulite treatments are performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the area being treated. Most mild bruising, swelling or tenderness, which usually settles within a few weeks. Compression garments may be advised to support healing and results.
With subcision and plasma skin tightening, patients often notice immediate improvements, with continued skin smoothing over the following months as new forms. Liposuction results can also be seen quickly but continue to improve as swelling resolves.
Long-Term Results and Maintenance
The results of subcision are long-lasting, as the bands that were released do not grow back. Plasma skin tightening continues to boost skin quality for months after the procedure. While cellulite may not disappear completely, it is usually reduced to a much more manageable and less noticeable level.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, balanced nutrition and good hydration will help sustain results. As cellulite can be influenced by hormonal and genetic factors, ongoing maintenance treatments may be recommended for some patients.
Choosing the Right Clinic for Cellulite Treatment
Cellulite is best treated by specialists who understand the difference between fat reduction and structural skin concerns. At Centre for Surgery in London, we provide a full range of body contouring and skin tightening procedures. Our surgeons will carefully assess your concerns and design a treatment plan tailored to your goals.
We believe in offering honest advice. If liposuction will not improve cellulite, we will explain why and recommend more suitable alternatives, Barbie Botox (Traptox) such as our combination of subcision and argon plasma skin tightening.
