What is Tumescent Liposuction?
Posted on [post_date] [post_comments] [post_edit]
We realise that yoga has become quite the trend over the years, and many of our patients often chat with us about how they keep fit. It’s not just ‘yoga’ anymore. People are into all sorts of variations like hot yoga, power yoga, acro yoga, and even water yoga. To be honest, there are so many types, some of which I’ve probably even .
But confusion isn’t a one-way street. Just like how yoga has so many different styles, in the world of plastic surgery, especially with something as popular as liposuction, there are loads of trendy names that can make your head spin. You’ve got Vaser liposuction, tumescent liposuction, SmartLipo, CoolLipo, and the list goes on. It’s quite easy to feel overwhelmed with all these choices in our field as well.

So, let’s clear up some of that confusion, shall we? We’ll start by explaining one of the most well-known types: .
Understanding Tumescent Liposuction
A great way to understand tumescent liposuction is to break down the name. ‘Tumescent’ basically means that something becomes puffy or swollen. In the case of this procedure, a special mixture made of local anaesthetic, medication, and saltwater is used to puff up the layer of fat just beneath the skin. This makes the tissue firm and swollen, giving the surgeon more control when they’re sculpting your body.
Because this mixture includes a local anaesthetic, most people don’t need to be fully knocked out for the surgery, which is a big plus for some. However, if you’re having a lot of fat removed or if the procedure is more complex, then a regional anaesthetic like an epidural block might be used instead. This is the same type of anaesthetic that’s often used during childbirth. There are also cases where people prefer to be asleep during the procedure, opting for general anaesthesia.
These are all crucial things to think about, and we’ll go over all these options during your consultation. Our main aim is to come up with a plan that’s tailored to meet your specific needs.
Tumescent Liposuction Today
Back in the day, about 30 years ago, one of the main worries with liposuction was losing too much blood during the procedure. In fact, it was such a concern that surgeons often asked patients to donate their own blood a few weeks before the surgery. This donated blood would then be used for a transfusion during the operation, just in case.
RELATED:
Fast forward to today, and the tumescent technique has been a game changer in reducing this risk. One of the key ingredients in the solution used for tumescent liposuction is a medication that helps to minimise . Research shows that most patients now lose only around ml of blood—roughly the equivalent of 1 to 2 tablespoons—when undergoing large volume using the tumescent method. That’s a significant improvement over the past.
Reducing risks and increasing patient comfort are cornerstones of good surgical practice, and that fits right into our philosophy here. The tumescent technique allows us to offer a safer, more comfortable experience for our patients, and that’s something we take great pride in.
The body areas that can be treated by are different for women and men. The most frequently treated areas for women are the abdomen, hips, outer thighs, inner thighs, knees, arms and buttocks. In men, who comprise about 15% to 25% of liposuction patients, the most commonly treated areas include the abdomen, flanks (“love-handles”), and breasts. At a consultation, you can specify which areas you would like treated – your surgeon will then devise a treatment plan to create the most aesthetically pleasing result for you.
In a nutshell, tumescent offers several key advantages. It reduces the of bruising and blood loss, allows for more precise body contouring, and generally makes for a more comfortable post-surgery experience. This technique is what we often refer to as “traditional” liposuction these days, and many of the other flashy names you hear for variations are often just building upon the tumescent method. It’s the gold standard for liposuction worldwide, and it’s proven to be both safe and effective, apart from the usual risks associated with any liposuction procedure.
