The absence of democratic political representation of the city’s residents and the lack of institutional clarity in defining the relationship between the city government and the surrounding Oromia regional state has hindered addressing these urban challenges. Along with population growth, the administrative boundary of Addis Ababa expanded from an estimated 32 km2 in 1912[9] to 218 km2 in 1984[10] and 527 km2 in 1994.[11] Built-up areas of the city and the larger metropolitan region also expanded. The metropolitan region’s built-up land area expanded from 80.6km2 in 1984 to 198.7km2 in 2005 and further to 364.5km2 in 2015. Addis Ababa’s population is almost ten times larger than Ethiopia’s second-largest city, Gondar.[4] Most of Ethiopia’s administrative, diplomatic and commercial activities are concentrated in the city. Addis Ababa is strongly linked economically and through road infrastructure with other major urban centres of Ethiopia. It is also connected with Djibouti’s port, through a railway, and to Nairobi, with a recently upgraded highway.
Other features of the city include the large Mercato market, the Jan Meda racecourse, Bihere Tsige Recreation Centre and a railway line to Djibouti. Addis Ababa is Ethiopia’s capital, located in the geographic epicentre of the country, and surrounded by the regional state of Oromia. It is the largest city in the country and plays a central political, economic and symbolic role in Ethiopia. Constitutionally, Addis Ababa is a self-administered city accountable to the federal government. However, since its establishment, successive national political elites have sought to project power from the city, control Ethiopia and showcase their developmental aspirations.
The urgency of developing more effective mechanisms to capture rising land values for urban infrastructure and services is now widely acknowledged. The bulk of the export and import trade of Ethiopia is channeled through Addis Ababa on its way to or from the ports of Djibouti, on the Gulf of Aden, or Asseb, Eritrea, on the Red Sea. The city is also the collection and distribution centre for much of the country’s internal trade. The Mercato, located in the western part of the city, is one of the largest open-air markets in Africa.

This will not make the search faster, unless the string is in the first part of the file, but in all case will reduce memory consumption which might be a good idea if the file is huge. With this you can access the file as if it were already loaded into memory and the OS will take care of mapping it in and out as possible. Also, if you do this from 2 independent processes and they map the file “shared”, they will share the underlying memory.
There were only limited changes in Addis Ababa between 1941 and 1960, but development has been impressive since then. In its first years the city was more like a military encampment than a town. The central focus was the emperor’s palace, which was surrounded by the dwellings of his troops and of his innumerable retainers. In 1905 a large number of eucalyptus trees were imported from Australia; the trees spread and provided a forest cover for the city.
